Our Veggie Garden

Today we started our very first veggie/herb garden on the side of our house (the side that has been neglected & overgrown with salvie & weeds since we moved in). John came up with the idea of making a little garden there since it seems to get morning & afternoon sun. Yippee!!! I moved my herbs, tomatoes, & cucumber over & got a few other things to add...peppers & squash...yum!! It was really fun digging around with the kids despite my injured toe. Yes...goofy me likes to bike in flip flops & my gear shifted mid pedal last night & my right foot went down HARD on the pavement. Later came,..lots of blood & a tetanus shot, but luckily no stitches...just a lovely "big toe bandage."

Watching...

This week Jack & Maddie are both doing morning camps..Jack (art) & Mad (princess/dance). It's been nice being back on a morning schedule..something to push us out the door in the morning & into bed earlier at night. Jack's art camp is at Dublin's Art Council (a 1940's French-electic sytle) home that sits along the Scioto river. It's fun to just sit & enjoy the views there. Today we heard a screeching bird & looked up to see this high flyer.

Loving the Daisies

Summer is official & all my daisies are smiling. Maddie has been plucking away & passing them out, so tonight I showed her how to pluck he loves me, he loves me not...
her version went something like this..
he loves me, he doesnt, loves me, loves me not, loves me, doesnt, repeat, repeat. somehow the last petal always became HE LOVES ME!!!

Around the house...

Got the camera out today...the house looks like a bomb exploded in every corner spilling legos, cars, bakugans, sigh...the list goes on. But it's summer & some days it just feels good to let it go for awhile.
Here's a little of what I saw today...Rebuilding of a lego pirate ship, my happy cucumber plant...thanks Yumi:), Maddie's new favorite dress, shells...lots of shells & my fav!

Mr. Men & Little Miss...

Who knew there was a whole group of personalities waiting for us to discover written by Roger Hargreaves. On vacation we stumbled onto a sweet little bookstore...the kind that lures you in & time stops while you browse. Before we even got through the front door, Jack spotted these cute little character books on the outside display. I recognized them because we have a few tucked on a bookshelf from my classroom stash...somehow forgotten about. Jack was SOO excited & he ended up convincing us to buy 3 of them, Mr. Tickle, Mr. Daydream & Mr. Happy. Looks like most of them were written in the 70s & 80s. We are loving them. I tried to find more at the library today, but none were on the shelves. I reserved the few that they had online. There's even a website & tvshows with all these little people...who knew? http://www.mrmen.com/us/?deeplink=parent

JK's Lair

Highlights from our trip to the Outer Banks..

Watching....the waves, the kids playing with Yaya & Poppy on the beach, Jack running & running on the sand letting the waves chase him, pelicans skimming the oceantop, Poppy & Jack searching for shells & treasures, crabs peeking out of their holes, the night sky with no city lights for miles, Maddie in the pool feeling so proud of herself, the guys fishing & a lone crab hooked, kites flying!!

Exploring... Duck & Corolla, Wright Bros memorial, Curritck lighthouse (even though we never made it up), Whalehead treasure hunt, doughnut shops, beach shops, new parks!!

Loving...bike rides, dinner at Aqua S, playing in the pool, late night & early morning doughnuts, watching John with J&M in the pool, seeing Bond on an adventure, relaxing in the hot tub, beach time, my new flip flops, reading with my toes in the sand, walks at sunset!!

We officially traveled 1,376 miles round trip & it was so worth it.

Reading...

Homemade Life. Molly Wizenberg
A very cool book full of the author's life stories & recipes.. made Burg's Potato Salad for a cookout last weekend. I didn't follow the recipe exactly (exempting the caraway seeds & less onions)....but it turned out tasty..maybe pickle next time. There are so many recipes in the book that I hope to try...ratatouille, pink cookies, pancakes...it's a hard book to read late at night w/o going to bed with a rumble in your tummy.

Spying on Ms. Spider

We've been spying on Ms. Spider minus the "Hollow Tree" & Kristin Davis' voice:) in the corner of our garage the last few days. My first thought was to move her since lots of spiders usually come out of the egg sac...right?? But we decided to let her be & keep watch from a distance with shoes on:)
